SUMMER SaiLing Programs

Our Summer Sailing Program invites children ages 6 to 16 to embark on an unforgettable journey on the water! Whether your child is a complete novice or ready to refine their skills, there’s no experience necessary—all are welcome to join us! We provide all the equipment and support they’ll need—just bring along sunscreen, a water bottle, a towel, and a big smile! With a blend of fun, teamwork, and outdoor exploration, this program sparks a passion for sailing while creating lifelong memories. Join us for a summer filled with excitement, learning, and laughter!

SCHEDULE

Each session meets Monday – Friday for a one-week or two-weeks. Morning sessions meet from 9 AM to NOON.  All day sessions meet from 9 AM – 4 PM.

ELIGIBILITY

Our programs are open to all sailors who have reached their 6th birthday.  All children are required to pass a swim check administered on the first day of class. Students must be able to swim 25 yards wearing the clothes they will be sailing in, including a life jacket and shoes.

PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS

Age-Appropriate Instruction: Tailored lessons for different skill levels, ensuring everyone gains confidence on the water.

Interactive Learning: Activities include games and challenges that make sailing concepts engaging and accessible.

Supportive Environment: Our trained instructors follow a detailed curriculum incorporating a variety of games and activities, delivered with lots of encouragement and enthusiasm.

Valuable Life Lessons: In addition to sailing skills, students learn important lessons in safety, responsibility, self-reliance, decision-making, teamwork, and respect for the environment.

Safety First: Emphasis on safety guidelines and practices, ensuring participants learn how to sail responsibly.

Environmental Education: Learning about local ecosystems and the importance of preserving our waterways, fostering a lifelong love for sailing in a fun and friendly atmosphere.

CURRICULUM OVERVIEW

Throughout the program, participants will cover essential sailing topics, including:

Basic Sailing Terminology and Concepts: Sailors will familiarize themselves with boat parts, sailing terminology, and safety protocols, ensuring a solid foundation for their sailing journey.

Sailing Fundamentals: Participants will learn basic sailing maneuvers like tacking and jibing, as well as how to read wind direction. These foundational skills will be reinforced through interactive games and hands-on activities.

Intermediate and Advanced Techniques: As students’ progress, they will build confidence in more advanced sailing techniques, including sail trimming and boat control. Instructors will focus on developing both individual and team sailing skills.

Exploration and Teamwork: Sailors will engage in meaningful expeditions to local landmarks, combining sailing with environmental education about local ecosystems. Team-building exercises will enhance collaboration and camaraderie among participants.

Skill Development in a Variety of Boats: Depending on their skill level, participants may sail in SailCubes, Optimist Dinghies, O’Pen Skiffs, Sunfish, and C/420s.

SCHOLARSHIPS

Manatee River Youth Sailing Inc offers scholarship assistance for all programs. We do require financial information to grant scholarships. Scholarship assistance is completely confidential.

REFUND & CANCELLATION ​POLICY

Sailing will take place rain or shine. There are no cancellations or make-up days and no refunds. In the case of rain, lightning, small craft warnings, unsafe conditions or lack of wind, land based activities will be offered in place of sailing. ​

WHAT TO BRING & WEAR

​Please Label Everything!

  • Closed Toe Shoes (no sandals)
  • Sunscreen (re-apply during breaks)
  • Water Bottle (refill stations provided)
  • Beach Towel
  • Snack (small coolers OK)
  • Hat and Sunglasses
  • Clothes that can get wet
  • Comfortable Life Jacket (we have loaners available in many sizes)
  • Backpack (with dry clothes)

PICK UP & DROP OFF

We are located in the Bishop Sailing Center at the Bradenton Yacht Club, 4307 13th Street W, Palmetto, FL.

Morning Classes: Drop Off 9 AM – Pick Up 12 PM

All Day Classes: Drop Off 9 AM – Pick Up 4 PM

All students must be signed in and out with an instructor by a parent or guardian. No sailors may be left unattended on-site outside of MRYS sailing hours. If you cannot take your child in hand, please make arrangements for another adult to sign them in and out. 

USE OF MANATEE RIVER YOUTH SAILING BOATS
Children who use MRYS boats are responsible for exercising reasonable care and good seamanship. They shall reimburse the MRYS for the cost of any loss of, or damage to, a boat, its equipment, or the property of others that results from the neglect of such care and seamanship. In addition, participants recognize that hazards are involved in the operation of boats and therefore make no claims against the Manatee River Youth Sailing or the Bradenton Yacht Club based on injuries related to the use of the boats. Anyone participating in the MRYS must wear a U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jacket at all times on the water and must return the boat and its equipment to the place and in the condition in which it was found.
